Willamette Valley Chypre Eau De Parfum
Once upon a time, in a green valley tucked between mountains and rain, there lived a ruler who possessed nearly everything one might reasonably require to be content.
Naturally, this left plenty of time to worry about someone else.
Every morning, the ruler consulted a beautiful enchanted mirror. But instead of simply admiring the reflection, the ruler had developed the unfortunate habit of asking how it compared with a certain person who lived quietly on the other side of the valley.
Who was more admired?
Who possessed the finer craft?
Whose garden grew better things?
Whose name traveled farther beyond the forest?
The mirror, having no particular instinct for self-preservation, occasionally answered incorrectly.
This became a problem.
The person across the valley wasn’t especially interested in the competition. They were busy tending an unusual garden, making beautiful things, studying old books, practicing their craft, and generally committing the rather provocative offense of having something worthwhile to do.
The ruler became fascinated.
Soon, huntsmen began appearing at the garden gate.
They rarely looked like huntsmen, of course. That would have been terribly obvious.
Some arrived as curious travelers. Others as admirers, helpful acquaintances, wandering merchants, or people who had somehow developed extremely specific questions about precisely how the gardener grew certain plants, constructed certain things, learned certain skills, or came to certain conclusions.
Each wanted only a tiny piece of information.
A seed here.
A recipe there.
A little explanation of technique.
Nothing important.
Curiously, the same little questions kept finding their way back to the castle, where answers could be studied, rearranged, imitated, or occasionally transformed into entirely different stories about the person who had supplied them.
The ruler called this intelligence gathering. The ravens called it a routine flight schedule.
Unfortunately for the castle, the gardener understood exactly what the huntsmen were doing.
And made a rather interesting decision.
Instead of chasing them away, the gardener began playing along.
Questions received answers just interesting enough to require another question. Promising trails wandered pleasantly into the woods. Tiny mysteries produced larger mysteries. A visitor who arrived expecting to carry home a useful little secret occasionally discovered that obtaining it required three more visits, several conversations, and considerably more effort than anyone had budgeted.
The huntsmen became busier.
The castle became busier.
The gardener returned to gardening.
It was an elegant arrangement.
The ruler continued spending time, attention, messengers, and resources trying to extract something valuable from the person across the valley, while the gardener discovered that an obsession could be surprisingly expensive when permitted to finance itself.
Eventually, it became difficult to determine who was studying whom.
And still the huntsmen came.
By then, obtaining information may no longer have been entirely the point. Every visit maintained the comparison, every question kept the gardener at the center of the ruler’s attention, and every expedition gave the castle another reason to discuss the person it supposedly considered insignificant.
Which was perhaps the strangest part of the whole affair.
For someone supposedly beneath comparison, the gardener required an astonishing amount of royal funding.
WILLAMETTE VALLEY CHYPRE opens with bright sweet orange and bergamot before moving into aromatic lavender and juniper, crisp and green against the damp air of the valley. Patchouli and fir settle beneath them like a shadowed evergreen forest, while labdanum brings the warm, resinous depth characteristic of a classical chypre.
The result is green, citrus-bright, woody and quietly mysterious—something like walking through an enchanted Oregon forest while somewhere, very far behind you, an exhausted little huntsman is following another promising trail.
The mirror, meanwhile, had stopped answering questions.
It was beginning to suspect the gardener understood reflections considerably better than the ruler did.
