Once upon a time, beside an old stone bridge, vetiver grew along the road.
Above ground it wasn’t particularly dramatic. It simply kept growing. Below ground, however, its roots traveled deep into the earth, becoming richer and more complex with time.
Unfortunately, it had neighbors.
Beneath the bridge lived the Shadowlurkers, creatures gifted at reading other creatures’ feelings and considerably less gifted at sharing them. They watched everyone crossing overhead: who was loved, who succeeded, who belonged, and who appeared suspiciously happy without permission.
It helped with the boredom.
Soon watching became comparison, comparison became envy, envy dressed itself as contempt, and contempt became antagonism. “I despise you” sounded much more dignified than “ I have accidentally made you my primary source of entertainment”.
The Shadowlurkers became particularly interested in one traveler steadily crossing the bridge. They raced ahead, doubled back, whispered, placed obstacles, recruited spectators, and repeatedly checked the traveler’s progress.
The traveler apparently hadn’t received notice that a race had been scheduled.
Awkward.
Worse, the Shadowlurkers assumed that because the traveler didn’t retaliate, the traveler couldn’t see them. They never considered that someone might recognize another creature’s insecurity perfectly well and simply decide not to poke it.
Kindness isn’t blindness.
And antagonism, unfortunately, has terrible privacy settings. Envy says, I want something you have. Gossip says, I think about you when you aren’t here. Obsessive watching says, “your journey has become more interesting to me than mine”.
Meanwhile, the vetiver kept growing.
Years passed. The oil from its roots became deeper, darker, richer, and more valuable. The Shadowlurkers also spent those years underground.
Results varied.
Eventually, an unfortunate mathematical truth emerged: a traveler moving slowly in one direction accumulates distance. A Shadowlurker racing forward, backward, sideways, and in circles accumulates mostly cardio.
And time does not improve everything simply because it passes.
Some things age into depth.
Some things mature into something rare.
And some things spend years beneath a bridge monitoring everyone else’s journey and calling it a personality.
AGED VETIVER
Deep. Earthy. Rooted. Patiently transformed by time.
Because some things spend years underground becoming valuable.
Others just spend years underground.

Found this company on a trip to Oregon and scoured the internet to re-order years later. Hubs and I are both obsessed!
